Avalanche warning for region Nordenskiöld Land Wednesday 24.05.2023

Danger level 2 - Moderate avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with fresh wind deposited snow. There is a persistent weak layer at higher altitudes. Wet avalanches can occur where the snow is wet. Be careful beneath and in the vicinity of cornices.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Poor bonding between layers in wind deposited snow

Persistent weak layer (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3). Remote triggering is possible.

Buried weak layer of faceted snow above a crust

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

Avalanches may release spontaneously on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Tuesday 23. May 2023

Mountain weather

Tuesday 23. May 2023

12 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 600 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Strong breeze from south, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the evening. -2 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Wednesday 24. May 2023

3 mm precipitation, up to 10 mm in the most exposed areas. Rain up to 200 m a.s.l during the afternoon. Fresh breeze from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the east during the afternoon. -2 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
